Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned diver, Santorini’s unique ecosystem is teeming with life just waiting to be explored.
At Santorini Scuba Academy, we take you beyond the postcard views and into the vibrant underwater world of the Aegean Sea.
What Marine Life Can You See in Santorini?
The waters around the island — especially in the Caldera — are home to a rich variety of marine species. While Santorini isn’t a tropical reef destination, its volcanic structure and nutrient-rich waters support some truly exciting underwater encounters.
Groupers and Moray Eels
Large groupers are a common sight, often seen hiding among the rocks. Moray eels also peek out from crevices, adding a bit of mystery to your dive.
Octopus
One of our diver favorites! The octopus is highly intelligent and well-camouflaged. Spotting one feels like discovering a secret.
Barracuda and Jacks
In open water or near wrecks, you may see schools of barracuda or jacks, especially during summer months.
Nudibranchs and Starfish
Macro lovers will enjoy hunting for nudibranchs, colorful sea slugs that are rare but present — along with vibrant starfish scattered along rocky seabeds.
Sponges, Sea Urchins & Anemones
Santorini’s volcanic seabed hosts lots of invertebrates, such as colorful sponges, urchins, and gentle anemones, making the dive feel alive.
Why Santorini’s Caldera Is Special
The Caldera was formed by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. Today, it provides a unique underwater terrain of cliffs, lava rock formations, and walls, creating perfect hiding spots for marine life.
Our dive sites include volcanic caves, drop-offs, and wrecks that act as artificial reefs — supporting both resident and migratory species.
Tips for Spotting Marine Life While Diving
-
Move slowly and keep your eyes on cracks and holes in the rocks
-
Don’t chase or disturb marine animals — patience brings the best encounters

Use an underwater flashlight to peek into dark crevices
-
Go with a local dive guide.
